Remembering the 1983 Saint Louis Green Bay Playoff Thriller
Alright, listen up, y’all. I’m gonna tell ya ’bout that football game, the one with them Saint Louis fellas and the Green Bay boys way back in ’83. Yeah, 1983, that was a long time ago, I tell ya. My memory ain’t what it used to be, but I remember some things.
That game, that playoff game, it was a big deal. Saint Louis Cardinals versus the Green Bay Packers. Folks were talkin’ ’bout it for weeks. January 8th, that’s when it was. Cold as a well digger’s backside, I reckon.

Now, I ain’t no football expert, ya hear? I don’t know all them fancy plays and such. But I know when a team gets whooped, and let me tell ya, Green Bay whooped Saint Louis. The score, I think it was somethin’ like 41 to 16. Yep, 41 to 16. That’s a mighty big difference, ain’t it?
- Saint Louis scored 16 points.
- Green Bay scored a whole lot more, 41 points.
- That means Green Bay won, see?
Folks were sayin’ Green Bay had a good team that year. They had this fella, Lynn Dickey, he was their quarterback. Threw the ball real good, they said. I didn’t see him throw it myself, but that’s what folks were sayin’. He even had himself a real good game later that year, in September, I think.
That game was part of the NFC playoffs, the wild card game they called it. Means if ya lose, ya go home. Saint Louis, they went home. Green Bay, they kept on playin’. I don’t rightly remember how far they got, but they won that game, that’s for sure.
Now, Green Bay, they’ve been playin’ football for a long, long time. Since like, 19-somethin’. Sixty-somethin’ years they been playin’, I heard. That’s a lot of football games. They had some good years and some bad years, just like everybody else.
This 1983 season, it was their 65th season overall, and their 63rd in the NFL, the National Football League, whatever that is. They finished with eight wins and eight losses, they called that 8 and 8. Not too good, not too bad, just kinda in the middle. Bart Starr was their coach that year. He was a player once, a good one, they said.
The Packers, they had some real good times later on too. Like in the 90s and 2000s. They went to the Super Bowl a few times, won a couple of ’em. Made the playoffs a whole bunch of times. But that’s a story for another day. We’re talkin’ about that 1983 game, remember?
So, yeah, that’s what I remember ’bout that Saint Louis and Green Bay game. Green Bay won, 41 to 16. Cold day, January 8th, 1983. Lynn Dickey, he played quarterback. Bart Starr was the coach. And that’s all I gotta say ’bout that.
It wasn’t just any game, it was a playoff game, and that made it special. Folks were excited, even me, and I didn’t even know much about football. But it was something to talk about, somethin’ to get folks together. And that’s what matters, I reckon.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself some supper. All this talkin’ ’bout football makes a body hungry.
