Stuff the Magic Dragon: Orlando Magics Fun-Loving Mascot
Alright, so you wanna know about that Orlando Magic mascot, huh? Well, let me tell ya, that thing’s a dragon, a big green dragon they call Stuff.
Stuff the Magic Dragon, that’s his full name, fancy ain’t it? They say it’s from some old song, “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” but they changed it up a bit. Someone told me “stuff” also means when them basketball fellas slam dunk the ball. Sounds about right, them fellas do a lot of slammin’ and dunkin’.
That dragon’s been around since way back in 1989. Yep, been hoppin’ and jumpin’ on that basketball court for a long, long time. Guess he ain’t gettin’ too old for it, though, still see him on TV sometimes, dancin’ and makin’ a fool of himself. Good for him, I say, keepin’ busy.
Someone told me the fella who started the Magic team, Pat somethin’-or-other, he thought about havin’ a rabbit or a wizard as the mascot. Can you imagine? A rabbit? Hopping around, eatin’ carrots? Wouldn’t be much of a mascot, would it? And a wizard? What’s he gonna do, wave a stick and make the ball go in the hoop? Nah, a dragon’s much better, more… fire, you know? Speakin’ of fire have you ever seen the dragon breathe fire? No? Well me neither, but maybe one day he will, that would be something to see.

- He dances a lot.
They say he does all sorts of things, got achievements and antics, they call ’em. Antics, that just means he goofs around, right? Well, I coulda told ya that. Seen him myself on that TV screen, shakin’ his big green belly and wavin’ his arms all over the place. Gets the crowd goin’, though, so I guess he’s doin’ somethin’ right.
And you know what? That dragon’s got followers, lots of ’em! Someone told me he’s got over fifty thousand followers on somethin’ called… “the internet”? I dunno, sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me. But fifty thousand folks lookin’ at that dragon? That’s a whole lotta people. Guess they like watchin’ him jump around.
I reckon havin’ a dragon for a mascot makes sense. The team’s called Magic, right? And dragons, well, they’re kinda magical, ain’t they? At least in them stories they are. Flyin’ around, breathin’ fire, protectin’ treasures. I ain’t ever seen a real dragon, but I seen plenty on TV, and that Stuff fella seems friendly enough. For a dragon, I mean.
He’s been around a long time. Some say Stuff is the best mascot in the NBA. He is very active on social media. He seems to bring the fans joy and that is all that matters when it comes to being a mascot.
So there ya have it, that’s the lowdown on that Orlando Magic mascot. He’s a green dragon named Stuff, he likes to dance, and he’s got a whole bunch of folks followin’ him around. More than most folks in my town that is for sure. Doesn’t sound like much, but I guess it’s enough to keep them basketball fans happy. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? Keepin’ folks happy. That, and maybe winnin’ some basketball games, I suppose. But I don’t know much about that, I just watch the dragon.
