Well, let me tell ya ’bout these young’uns in year 3, bless their hearts. It ain’t easy bein’ little, learnin’ all that stuff they throw at ’em. Year 3, they say. Sounds fancy, but it just means they’re seven or eight, and full of beans, most of ’em.

I heard tell that some big test, TIMSS they call it, showed how kids do in math and science. Seems like some places do good in one thing, bad in another. Like, some smarty-pants kids are good with numbers but can’t tell a square from a circle, or the other way around. Opposite of them other countries, so they say. Kids these days, huh?

And them Aussie kids, they dipped a bit in math scores this year. Used to be 556, now it’s 552. Don’t mean much to me, numbers is numbers, but folks get all worked up about it. Guess they want them kids to be rocket scientists or somethin’.

So, what do they learn in year 3, you ask? Well, it’s a whole heap of things. They got their English, gotta learn to read and write proper, even though half the time I can’t understand what they’re sayin’ with their big words. Then there’s maths. Addin’ and subtractin’, and all that. They even got them online tests now, just like the big kids. Fancy that!

There’s three classes in year 3, I heard. Each one’s got a teacher, and that teacher’s supposed to look after ’em, teach ’em their lessons, and make sure they don’t go runnin’ off into the woods or somethin’. They teach ’em history too, tellin’ ’em stories about olden times. And geography, learnin’ about all them different places, even though most of ’em ain’t never gonna see ’em.

And then there’s this PSHEC thing. Personal, social somethin’ or other. Sounds like a mouthful to me. Guess they teach ’em how to be good little citizens, not to fight and share their toys. Lord knows, some of ’em need it.

• English: Reading, writing, and all that jazz.
• Maths: Numbers, numbers, everywhere.
• History: Stories ’bout old folks.
• Geography: Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Just kiddin’. It’s about maps and places.
• PSHEC: Bein’ nice and sharin’ your cookies.

They got all sorts of help for these kids, too. Books and stuff for the grown-ups and the little ones. And them teachers, they get help too. Daily math questions, they say. Keeps ’em on their toes, I guess.

And them teachers, some of ’em are real special, they even get awards and such. Best teachers, they call ’em. From all over, state schools and them fancy private ones too. Even for the little tykes in early years. It’s nice to see folks gettin’ recognized for their hard work.

And London, they say, them kids do the best, highest scores and all. 84.4 percent, that’s a lot, ain’t it? Good for them, I say. But every kid’s different, some learn fast, some learn slow. Just gotta be patient with ’em, that’s what I say.

So that’s the lowdown on year 3, as far as I can tell. It’s a big year for them little ones, learnin’ all sorts of new things. Hope they have fun doin’ it, ’cause learnin’ should be fun, not a chore. And that’s all I gotta say about that.
